MAIL ART

FLAT PACK

A bit of background

flat pack 3 was a kind of prototype for flat pack two. The numbers aren't sequential as I'd already had the idea for flat pack two but was still working out how to get sheets mount card cut into 2500 sqaures with slots cut out without having to do it manually (which would have been extremely time consuming, and to be quite honest, amazingly tedious). So as a practice run I sent a box of cardboard flat pack modules to Catalyst Arts in Belfast for a mail art show they were planning call States of Union? As far as I am aware the States of Union? show never took place but my friend Justin McKeown knew of the existence of the box so liberated it from the Catalyst archives and used it as a party game for art's birthday party at the Centre for Suburban Research

What they said about flat pack 3

"I totally love this! I like building monuments for our dusty beetles!" Meabh (aged 25)
"The shapes have formed themselves into an architectural form" Carmel (Meabh's ma)
"It reminded me of the old saying by Rory Bremner (while doing his impersonation of Malcolm Riffkind of the Tory Party): "I'm not dull!" he shouted, and I think the structures people build from the uniform, basic shapes shout that too." Gerard Mckeown (aged 26)
"I like my things" Luke
"What a nice way to pass the morning" Justin McKeown
"GREAT FUN" anon.
